basics

name: Dr.Shawn Mendrick
nicknames: Shmendrick, Shmendrick the Great
birthday: October 7th, 1984
age: 24
handwriting: Here
manner of speech: Shawn's voice is a little bit husky, but she hardly sounds like a man. When she is in 'magician' mode, she's rather theatrical with what she's saying, but when she's just talking to someone, she sounds rather energetic; unless she doesn't like whoever she's talking to. Then she sounds a little bored.

siblings: Brendon Mendrick [20]
financial status: Middle class
appearance

height: 5'8"
weight: 125
build: Shawn has been blessed with an great figure. She has long legs, and a tall torso. She is also toned, so she isn't just a stick figure.

hair color: Blonde
dress style:
possessions usually found on person: A deck of cards.
psychological & physical

quirks/habits/mannerisms: Stumbles over her words when she's worked up.
likes:
patient specialties: Shawn will take on just about any patient, but works particularly well with children, or child-like patients. Her patients do not all have to be artistic, but it would be better if they at least appreciated art, since she will most likely suggest some sort of arts & craft project for them to do during their session. Because she is still an intern, she may take on a violent or aggressive patient, but only if they are artistic, and she believes that she can help them somehow.
treatment method: Art therapy. Shawn likes creating a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere for her patients, since she believes that this is very important. Her office is packed full of art supplies, and she will even throw a magic trick or two into one of her sessions if she believes a patient is feeling particularly gloomy that day…or, sometimes she’ll just do one for fun. When she prescribes a patient medication, she tries to keep the dosage low, since medications disrupt a person’s artistic flow. She talks to her patients while they work, trying to keep their conversations casual, so they feel as though they are just talking to another person, and not an authority figure of some sort.
introvert/extrovert: Extrovert
pessimist/optimist: Optimist

history

Shawn Mendrick was born on a cool October morning. Her proud parents, Sean and Jane, brought their baby girl home to their home, located in Manhattan, New York, and showed her off to all of their friends and family. She was their first child, and they adored her, but never spoiled her. They taught her manners, and she would learn to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, and ‘excuse me’ if she wanted someone’s attention. She was a good girl, always smiling with a lot of energy, and when her parents informed her that she would be getting a sibling when she turned 4, the girl went nuts! She wanted to know everything about the new baby, and even thought up names, wondering if she would get a little brother, or a little sister. The new baby was what awakened the artist within Shawn, and she started to draw little pictures of her family. (Sure, they were stick figures at first, but she’d get better over time!) The child turned out to be a boy…but Brendon, which would become his name, was born with Down’s syndrome.

It took a while for Shawn to understand that her brother was different, but that didn’t mean she loved him any less. She would hold him, and read him stories, and when he got older, she would treat him just like she would anyone else. They would play games, and they would talk, and they just had an absolutely wonderful relationship. Everything was fine, until Brendon turned 11 and his hearing, which was already bad to begin with, started to worsen. Several trips to the hospital were made, and while he was there, Shawn would visit every day when she came home from school, and started learning a few magic tricks, so she could keep Brendon entertained. She was never particularly good, but her brother always appreciated her efforts.

One day, while she was in his hospital room with him, one of the doctors saw her performing one of her tricks, and suggested that maybe she sign up as a hospital volunteer, and work in the pediatric ward so that she could perform her silly magic tricks for the other kids, and maybe teach them how to draw, since she also brought her sketch book whenever she would go see Brendon. After thinking about it for a while, she agreed, and would start working at the hospital every day after school. It was alright, because it let her be close to her brother and put a smile on the sick children’s faces. There was one child in particular who she had a strong attachment to. Her name was Amelia, and she had an obsession with Unicorns. They were all that she would draw, and every time she saw her, she was wearing a unicorn shirt, with unicorns on her shoes, and unicorns on her pants. Shawn thought it was a bit odd, and had asked Amelia why she loved Unicorns so much, only to receive a very peculiar response:

“I used to be one.”

This stunned the 15 year old girl, and when she let out a laugh and told her she had quite the imagination, Amelia looked at her with those large, sad, beautiful ocean blue eyes and shook her head, telling her that she was telling the truth. When she asked the attending looking after Amelia about this, Dr.Molly Grue, she sighed and informed Shawn that Amelia had a brain tumor, and that was why she had the idea that she had once been a mythical creature. This upset the young girl, but like Brendon’s birth had awakened the artist within Shawn, Amelia’s sickness awakened the doctor.

At first, she wanted to do what Amelia’s doctor did…but after putting a lot of research into the different medical fields that were out there, she took an immediate interest in psychiatry. Still working as a volunteer at the hospital, Shawn would ask as many questions as she could whenever she had a doctor around to listen to her, and continued to put on her little magic shows for the children, and give art lessons to the patients who were interested in learning. By the time she was 17, Brendon had lost his hearing completely, but by then both he and his sister had learned to communicate through sign language. Another year went by, and even though Shawn had been incredibly upset whenever she heard the news that one of the children had passed away, she was absolutely devastated when she found out that Amelia was gone. Dr.Grue broke the news as gently as she could, but had to comfort Shawn for quite some time as she cried. The doctor, and Amelia’s parents, thought that it was only right that Shawn got the pictures that she had drawn right before her passing. The images in some of them were startling, since some of them included a frightening red bull standing in a sea of ghost-like unicorns…but there were other drawings that were far more pleasant. For example, there was a very animated wizard making wild arm gestures, and Shawn couldn’t help but laugh. The big nose and blonde hair made it clear that the drawing was supposed to be of her, and she immediately put the picture in a frame, labeling it ‘Shmendrick the Great’.

Graduating from High School, Shawn picked a college that was close to home, so she could still go to the hospital, and so she could still see her family every day. Once she graduated, she sent out her resume to various hospitals on the east coast, and received a phone call from Cheshire Crossing, accepting to place her within the hospital to begin and complete her internship. It was a very big deal, for her to leave the New York State area, but she promised to keep talking to her parents and to Brendon by using a web-cam. So, she set off to Cheshire, set up her office, and hung a very special picture above her desk.

Now, ‘Shmendrick the Great’ is on display for all to see…and Shawn Medrick is looking to make a difference for the patients at Cheshire Crossing as an intern, and grow into a full-fledged doctor as soon as she has the experience she needs under her belt.

storylines

Amalthea/The Unicorn [Female/Male]; This is a patient that Shawn is extremely attached to. She feels sorry for this person, and does all she can to help them, even if she sometimes does not feel like she has the power to do so. This patient is prone to making Shawn feel rather useless, without meaning to.

Prince Lir [Female/Male]; This is someone Shawn looks up to. This person is stronger, smarter, and braver than she is, and she often times wishes that she could match their strength, intelligence, and bravery. This person may take Shawn under their wing, hoping to teach her how to achieve those goals.

Molly Grue [Male]; This person is someone who points out most of Shawn's mistakes to her. Sometimes, she gets a little miffed when they continuously prove her wrong, but they do share many of the same beliefs, and ideas, even if they go about things differently. They have a very strong connection, and the Molly Grue is someone who Shawn could very well fall in love with.
[info]brianthedog

Mommy Fortuna [Female]; The Mommy Fortuna is a character who intimidates Shawn, to a degree. She is a persistent woman, and cares for no one but herself. Even if she knows that what she is doing is wrong, the Mommy Fortuna will think of some way to justify her actions. She also has a bad habit of hurting Shawn's feelings by making jabs at whatever she isn't perfect at.
[info]the_sin_trade

Ruhk [Female/Male]; The Ruhk is someone who is rather rude towards Shawn, but she doesn't necessarily blame the Ruhk because they are so small minded. The Ruhk is a character who is naive, gullible, and not very well educated, which makes the character say some things that they shouldn't. Shawn tries to get along with the Ruhk, but sometimes finds it to be difficult because of their personality.

King Haggard [Female/Male]; The King Haggard is someone who Shawn isn't necessarily fond of, but she does try and keep them happy. Shawn just tries to stay on their good side, because were she to get on their bad side, they could very well make her stay at Cheshire miserable. This character could be rather possessive, and power hungry.
[info]hibernal

Mabruk [Female/Male]; This person thinks they are much better than Shawn, at everything. Even if it isn't true, they are constantly putting her down...but she doesn't let it get to her. She just shrugs off this person's opinions of her, even though deep down they might get to her.

The Red Bull [Male]; This patient is someone who makes Shawn feel absolutely terrified, even if she doesn't wish to show it. Whenever The Red Bull is near, Shawn feels as though they are trying to manipulate her, and she will try to avoid this patient as much she can.

The Drunk Skeleton [Female/Male]; The Drunk Skeleton is someone who is constantly trying to make things difficult for Shawn. Whether it's just laughing at her when she asks them a question, giving her an answer that doesn't make any sense, or constantly talking in riddles, they try to get under Shawn's skin...but she's always able to outsmart them. This character may want something that only Shawn can provide for them, so they tend to suck up to her every now and then, especially when she reminds them that she has what they want.
[info]lokiofden

Captain Cully [Female/Male]; At first, the Captain Cully thinks that Shawn is nothing more than a wannabe doctor, but as time goes by, they realize that she truly is good at what she does. They are impressed with her work, and eventually the Captain Cully and Shawn could become friends.
[info]edisjust

The Butterfly [Female/Male]; The Butterfly is a character who is always willing to provide a helpful hand, but will not make things easy for Shawn. They will give her information, but not until she works for it, and will at times make her try to figure things out on her own, so she can learn through experience. They just guide her in the right direction, but let her journey down that path on her own.
[info]notamother

The Tree in Love [Female/Male]; This character is absolutely smitten with Shawn. They worship the ground she walks on, and may even become possessive over her. Shawn does not feel the same way about this person, but will try very hard not to hurt their feelings while also trying not to lead them on somehow.

The Dragon, Midgard Serpent, Manticor, and Satyr [Female(s)/Male(s) x4]; These are patients that, to Shawn, are not at all what they seem to be at first glance. She believes that these patients just need some guidance, and affection, and is willing to provide that for them whenever she can.
[info]tabbysmeltdown,

The Harpy [Female]; While the patients above are not what they seem to be, The Harpy is just as dangerous and manipulative as everyone says she is. She will try to convince Shawn that she is harmless, but were she to be within arms reach, The Harpy would destroy her in an instant, no matter what she did to try and stop her. Shawn wants to believe that there is hope for The Harpy, but knows that she is extremely hostile and should not be trusted.

The Talking Cat [Female/Male]; This is yet another character who is helpful, but not helpful to Shawn. They constantly speak in riddles, much like The Drunk Skeleton, but this character will at least attempt to make an effort to be friendly without wanting anything in return...except maybe a scratch behind the ears.

Would Edmund fit as Captain Cully? Or unless you think another of my characters fit better in another role.

He could, indeed! I'll go and add him. Most of her SL's can be filled in advance, but there's a few I'd like to base off of interactions. The Captain Cully isn't one of those, but we'll see how she and your other chars get along before we place them anywhere! ^_^

Hmm my doctor would probably make a good Mommy Fortuna, if you'd be interested? Althea Shaman ([info]the_sin_trade) is quite an intimidating person and she tends to bully her patients. Like Mommy Fortuna, she would always justify her actions even if she is wrong.

Hello there! Do you think it might be possible for Tabby to fulfill one of the roles (The Dragon, Midgard Serpent, Manticor, and Satyr....)? She's taken quite a shine to Shawn (which is rather odd for her to trust a Dr., but it works!). :)

Drop Dead Fred so needs a role with Shawn. Maybe Mabruk? If not, then maybe the dragon and that mess of a gang, lol.

And also, you never said if it was okay or not for Jeannie to be his Namby Pamby.
